My employer pays me and my co-workers by piece work. However, I can’t work fast enough to even make minimum wage. Can my employer pay me by the piece to avoid paying minimum wage?

  • No, while there are some exceptions, generally your employer must pay you at least minimum wage even if he is paying you buy the piece. In other words, if you are paid by the piece and that does not add up to paying you at least minimum wage for the hours you work, then you may have a claim for back wages against your employer.
